What happens when you fail to write a script that speaks to your audience and doesn’t meet your goals?

Hi, I’m Ravneet Oberoi, founder of French Fries Films and I’m here to tell you that if you’re looking to create an effective video to achieve a definite goal, the first thing you need to do is write a fairly detailed and engaging script.

Creating a script is an essential part of the video production process. Without a proper script, it’s almost as if you’re building a house without laying the foundation.

Script writing not only involves developing and structuring a great story, but also includes details such as lighting, locations, and numerous other variables, which taken together, form an effective script and essentially the blueprint of the video.

You may consider winging it, but chances are that your video will fail to meet its purpose and potential. Without a script, the message you’re trying to convey may just get lost in translation. And not only that, it’ll be a lot more work in post-production when multiple edits will have to be carried out to remove awkward pauses or restructure the shots so that the point isn’t getting lost.

So, if you’re thinking about skipping the script, here are a few things you should consider first.

1.   If you don’t have a concrete script in hand before the camera starts rolling, there’s a very real possibility that the whole production process will be extremely chaotic, with everyone from the crew to the cast, and from the Client to the video production team being caught up in all sorts of confusions.

2.   The process of planning a shoot is extremely complex and overwhelming at times. If you have a formalized script in hand, the process becomes that much easier. But, without the script, the video production team will end up with a bunch of random shots which may be difficult and time consuming to blend.

3.   Usually, if you don’t have a script before production, you will end up having to make important decisions with respect to structuring the storyline of the video at the time of editing, resulting in multiple revisions and quite possibly, long delays in the video delivery process.

4.  Even if you’re somehow able to come up with a structured storyline spontaneously, there’s a possibility that you might not be able to find relevant B-roll to compliment the story. And a video without suitable B-rolls is like under fried french fries. No one likes them!

5. Truly great videos combine A-roll and B-roll to make the visuals more effective and empathetic. But again, without a well- thought out script and storyline, chances are that your video production partner may end up overlooking some footage which may have been particularly useful for the purpose of the video.

An American movie producer Fred F. Finklehoffe was famously quoted saying, ‘if it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage’. The script of your video project sends a dynamic message that persuades someone to transition from viewer to customer. So, here’s a pro tip: take your time to develop your script to perfection. Cause trust me, the better the script, the better the video you’re going to end up with.
